Joseph Conrads contribution to literature, and his tale of men set off down a river, is so iconic that it is impossible not to see the reflection of certain scenes in other worksâ"The Life of Pi, for instance, borrows Conrads imagery of encountering a tiger; and the recent film The Lost City of Z likewise draws strongly on the narrative tropes of the journey into the unknown genre. For this reason, Conrads work cannot be overlooked, despite recent scholarly assertions that its depictions of colonialism have not aged well.The Black Cat, Edgar Allan Poe (1843)The Black Cat, sticks out as one of the greatest uses of an unreliable narrator in fictionâ"that is, the character telling the story has reason to avoid telling the whole truth. This story is ostensibly horrific, but is the kind of horror which creates dread rather than fear or disgust. It is written from the perspective of a condemned man, of arguable sanity, and follows the chain of events leading up to that characters crime and subsequent sentence to hang. Wells (1903)Stories like The Magic Shop, are astounding in their quickness. A very light read, this story will remind Harry Potter fans of the room of requirement. This is the amusing, strange, and violent tale of a cuckoo clock and adultery. A very quick read, Beyond the Door is recommended here because it is hard to make heads or tails of, and it certainly tells a unique t ale about marriage and how relationships can fall apart when viewed differently from each side.The Bet, Anton P. Chekhov (1889)The Bet is another, like Beyond the Door, which may leave readers unresolved. It is a short, short story discussing the virtues of morality and wealth, via the narrative device of a bet between two men regarding which is the greater punishment: death, or life imprisonment. Each character involved in the betâ"a lawyer and a bankerâ"are flawed, and so the outcome is ambiguous in some ways, but poses questions about what was sacrificed during the bet, and why each character lost gained wealth or morality by having made the bet. This attribute is given to children, despite the environment they are being raised in, which is grim. As the story progresses, the idea that children are ideal is tarnished, and the outcome of the story can be interpreted in a number of ways. We might conclude that a journey to the Araby bazaar is a journey into adulthood and that the change in the protagonists perspective is one created by a coming of age; or else we can view all of the romantic ideals at the outset of the story as simply a falsehood or façade, which was never truly indicative of what the boy was experiencing. In either case, Araby will likely leave a hole in your heart, and make you think about who you were when you were youngâ"and of course, that means you should read it.To concludeThe stories here ar e classics, but also powerful. Most of them are quite short, and great for a bite-sized piece of literary snack while we wait for George R. R. Martin to finish his next full-sized novel; or just so we remember some of the short stories which have helped shape the stories being told now. Swans who had settled under the trees for the night stirred and gave Marvin dirty looks. ââ¬Å"Nothing here,â⬠said Cavuto. ââ¬Å"Marvinââ¬â¢s not doing his signal thing.â⬠Riveraââ¬â¢s phone chirped and he looked at the screen. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Allison Green, the creepy little Goth girl.â⬠ââ¬Å"If she called this in I will put her in Juvi overnight.â⬠ââ¬Å"Rivera,â⬠Rivera said into the phone. ââ¬Å"Turn your sun jackets on right now,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Right fucking now, both of you.â⬠Rivera looked at Cavuto. ââ¬Å"Turn on the LEDs on your coat, Nick.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"Do it. Sheââ¬â¢s not fucking with us.â⬠Rivera hit the switch on the cuff of his sun jacket and the LEDs came on blindingly bright. A few blocks away they heard a man scream. Marvin barked. ââ¬Å"Oh, trs bon, cop. Byez,â⬠Abby said. The line went dead. ââ¬Å"The fuck was that about?â⬠said Cavuto. ROLF Rolf was actually looking forward to shooting someone. After hundreds of years, you get bored with killing, with hunting. The three of them had gone through cycles of stealthy killing of the unwanted, to outright slaughter of whole villages, to long periods where there was no killing at all. But it had been fifty years since heââ¬â¢d actually had to shoot someone. The change of pace was nice. Of course, it was messy, bodies, waste of good blood, but better that than having policemen running around telling people about them. No matter what kind of debaucheries they had indulged in over the years, and there had been many kinds-these too went in cycles-the one rule they held fast to was ââ¬Å"stay hidden.â⬠And to stay hidden, you couldnââ¬â¢t permit yourself to get so bored that you didnââ¬â¢t care about living. Well, surviving. Maybe it was just the two cops from last night. Elijah, in a rare moment of lucidity finally admitted that there were only two policemen that he knew of, and because they had taken money from the sale of the old vampireââ¬â¢s art collection, they did not want the secret known. Clearly though, they were beyond their depth with the cats. He and Bella had made short work of the smaller cats. They used rapid-fire pellet guns, nearly silent, that fired pellets containing a liquid that destroyed vampire flesh on contact-a heinous, herbal mixture that someone in China had discovered hundreds of years ago. A weak UV light on the front of the weapons held the animals in solid form long enough for the pellets to impact. The pellets would injure a human vampire, but they were devastating to a feline. The Chinese had somehow tuned it to the cats. They had used the mixture to contain every outbreak since its discovery. Rolf remembered firing it from crossbows. Rolf keyed his cell phone, then called the emergency number and reported a man being attacked by a giant cat. Then he set up the bipod on his rifle, zeroed the twenty-power scope in on one of the swans under a eucalyptus tree, and lay down to wait. Seven minutes later the police cruiser arrived. They were both fresh-faced young men with bright pink life auras. From his rooftop, four blocks away, Rolf could just make out the squawking of their radios. They knew nothing. They panned their flashlights under the bushes surrounding the pond, and he watched them shake their heads to one another. Seventeen minutes after the call, the brown unmarked car pulled up and Rolf relaxed into his shooting posture. These were the two from the night before. The big red dog. The dog looked his way, briefly, then dragged the big cop down to a tree by the pond. He put the crosshairs on the thinner copââ¬â¢s face. But no, a headshot was arrogant. He had to make two shots, very quickly, so he would go for the center of their bodies. Shoot the thin cop first, then pan to the big one. A bigger target. Even if his first shot didnââ¬â¢t kill him, it would drop him. He waited, waited for them to get clear of the car and the cover. The thin cop was walking toward the other one, then stopped to take a phone call. Rolf put the crosshairs over his heart and began to squeeze the trigger. Then the entire side of his head seemed to explode with pain and he screamed and grabbed at the flames that were shooting out of his empty eye socket. TOMMY ââ¬Å"Are we doing this right?â⬠Tommy asked. They were several blocks behind Rolf, who was moving so smoothly and easily through the Marina district that Tommy would have thought he lived there and was out for his evening jog. Except that no one in the Marina would be wearing a black duster. It would either be cashmere or Gore-Tex, business or fitness. The Marina was a rich, fit neighborhood. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re following him,â⬠said Abby. ââ¬Å"How many ways can you do that?â⬠Jody was leading them. She held up a hand for them to stop. The blond vampire had stopped at the corner of a four-story apartment building and was scaling it using just the space between the bricks as handholds. Tommy looked around and spotted a flat-roofed building down the alley. ââ¬Å"That one has a fire escape. Weââ¬â¢ll be above him, we can watch him.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think watching is going to be enough,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"He looks badass,â⬠said Abby. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s watching those cops over at the Palace.â⬠ââ¬Å"He wonââ¬â¢t just shoot a cop,â⬠said Tommy. ââ¬Å"Why would he shoot a cop?â⬠ââ¬Å"Plain clothes unit pulling in,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Rivera and Cavuto.â⬠ââ¬Å"And Marvin,â⬠Abby said. ââ¬Å"He knows they know,â⬠said Tommy. ââ¬Å"We need to go,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"Abby, you have Riveraââ¬â¢s number?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah.â⬠ââ¬Å"Call him. Give me that laser thing.â⬠ââ¬Å"The light from their jackets magnified through the scope will work,â⬠Tommy said. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s go.â⬠Jody ran to the edge of the roof and stopped. Abby hopped on her toes. ââ¬Å"Spider-Man it, Countess.â⬠ââ¬Å"No fucking way,â⬠Jody said, looking down just as Tommy ran by her and jumped across the alley to the next building. They were coming across the roof of a building a block away when they saw the side of the vampireââ¬â¢s head ignite and heard him scream. He rolled away from the gun, clawing at his face. ââ¬Å"Too far,â⬠Jody said. The final gap between roofs was over a full street, not an alley, and they were a floor lower than the blond vampire. ââ¬Å"Down.â⬠Without thinking, Tommy jumped, then said, ââ¬Å"What the fuck did I just do?â⬠He landed on the balls of his feet and went down to crouch, catching himself just as he was about to drive his knee into the concrete. He looked up. Jody was still on the roof. ââ¬Å"Cââ¬â¢mon, Red, Iââ¬â¢m not going up there alone.â⬠ââ¬Å"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck,â⬠she said, and then landed beside him and rolled. When he saw she wasnââ¬â¢t hurt, he said, ââ¬Å"Graceful.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s getting up,â⬠she said, and she pointed at the next building. Tommy knew if he thought about it, heââ¬â¢d never do it, so he just started climbing up the corner of the building as fast as he could. Heââ¬â¢d done this before. He didnââ¬â¢t remember it, but his body did. Climbing the wall like a cat. Jody was right behind him. As he reached the top of the wall he stopped and looked back. ââ¬Å"Sunglasses,â⬠he whispered so faintly that only someone with vampire hearing would hear. He wedged his right hand between the bricks, then reached into his shirt pocket, flung open the sunglasses, and put them on. He couldnââ¬â¢t climb with the laser in his hand. Heââ¬â¢d have to clear the top, then grab the weapon out of his pants pocket. Jody had her glasses on, too. She nodded for him to go. He coiled, and sprang to catapult himself over the edge of the wall, but in midair a bright light went off in his head and he felt himself spinning, then a bone-crushing impact on the ground. Something had hit him, probably the rifle butt. He rolled over and looked up the wall. Jody was still clinging there, six feet below the edge, too far to be hit with the rifle. The blond vampire, his face charred, was turning the rifle, working the bolt. He was going to shoot her in the face. ââ¬Å"Jody!â⬠He saw her let go with one hand, reach for the small of her back, then there was another blinding light. Heââ¬â¢d lost his sunglasses during the fall. Something splatted beside him on the pavement. He could smell burned flesh, and blood. ââ¬Å"You okay?â⬠she said. He felt a hand on his face. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m kinda blind. And I think I have a couple of broken ribs.â⬠He blinked the blood tears out of his eyes, then saw something dark, circular on the pavement. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the top of his skull,â⬠Jody said. Footsteps, then Abby was there. ââ¬Å"That was awesome. Gruesome, but awesome. You were amazing, Countess.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not feeling all that amazing.â⬠ââ¬Å"You probably should drink some blood, Tommy. Youââ¬â¢re kind of fucked up.â⬠He took the plastic blood pack from her and bit into it, draining almost the whole pint in seconds, feeling his bones and skin knitting together. Then Abby snatched it away from him and started drinking herself. ââ¬Å"I feel like death on toast. I probably shouldnââ¬â¢t have eaten that pigeon.â⬠MARVIN Marvin ruffed three times fast, ââ¬Å"Biscuit, biscuit, biscuit.â⬠Then, as he pulled Cavuto around the corner and smelled the fourth dead one he ruffed again. ââ¬Å"Another biscuit.â⬠Then, mission accomplished. He sat. ââ¬Å"Marvin!â⬠Abby said. She dropped the empty blood bag and scratched between his ears, then fed him a Gummi bear. Rivera came around the corner with his Glock drawn. Jody stood, reached past the gun, and snagged the battery out of the copââ¬â¢s inside pocket. Abby did the same to Cavuto, who leveled a long orange Super Soaker at her. ââ¬Å"Really, Ass Bear?â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Really?â⬠She snatched the squirt gun out of his hand and backhanded it a full block down the street where it shattered. ââ¬Å"I have a gun on you, Missy,â⬠said Rivera. ââ¬Å"Biscuit,â⬠Marvin ruffed. Clearly there are three dead people here and part of a fourth, and biscuits are in order. Jody snatched Riveraââ¬â¢s Glock out of his hand so quickly he was still in aiming position when she popped the clip out of it. Cavuto started to draw the big Desert Eagle and Abby caught his arm and leaned in close. ââ¬Å"Ninja, please, unless youââ¬â¢re going to use that to take your own life out of humiliation for the squirt gun, just let it go.â⬠She turned and looked at Tommy, who was sitting splayed-legged on the sidewalk, holding his ribs. ââ¬Å"This fucking vampy power rocks my deepest dark.â⬠Then back to Cavuto. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d slap you around a little, but Iââ¬â¢m feeling kinda nauseous.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠said Cavuto. ââ¬Å"I get that. They must know you guys are hunting Chet and the vampire cats.â⬠ââ¬Å"He must have seen us last night, with the Animals. We thought the cats got Barry.â⬠Tommy climbed to his feet. ââ¬Å"Barryââ¬â¢s dead?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠Rivera said. ââ¬Å"So they know about the Animals, too?â⬠Tommy said, ââ¬Å"The Animals were the ones who took Elijahââ¬â¢s art collection and blew up his yacht. They work.â⬠Marvin let go with a barrage of barking, which translated, ââ¬Å"I have found some dead people and I am going to make a fuss if I donââ¬â¢t get a biscuit and the ear-scratch girl is dead and sick.â⬠ââ¬Å"Easy, Marvin,â⬠Abby said. She steadied herself against the big dog and Cavuto caught her by the arm to keep her from falling. ââ¬Å"I really donââ¬â¢t feel good.â⬠She crumpled to the sidewalk. Tommy caught her in time to keep her head from hitting the concrete. ââ¬Å"My tail kind of hurts.â⬠Jody snatched Riveraââ¬â¢s gun out of his hand again. ââ¬Å"Give Tommy your car keys.â⬠ââ¬Å"What! No!â⬠Jody smacked Riveraââ¬â¢s jacket, heard a jingle, then reached in his pocket and took the keys. Rivera stood there like he was five, being dressed by his mother. This report is based on the findings of project Everyman a market research carried out in Brazil in order to understand the regional divide in terms of the income, culture, consumption pattern or usage of detergent powder between the consumers of North East and the South East areas of the country. The research also takes into account the competitors of Unilever in Brazil and also its sales and performance in the detergent market. And finally a recommendation is made on what would be the best marketing strategy which the company should adopt to penetrate into the largely unexplored low-income consumer segment in the Fabric wash business thereby expanding its market share and also increasing the profitability for the company. The economic recovery of 1995-1996 was beneficial for the low-income consumers, which meant that the purchasing power of the poorest 10% of the population grew by 27% per year during the period. Our main focus remains on the two main regions of Brazil, the Northeast and the Southwest, especially the lower income consumers of Northeast of Brazil. Consumer behaviour is the process individuals or groups go through to select, purchase, use and dispose of goods, services, ideas or experience to satisfy their needs and desires. (Solomon, Marshall, Stuart, Barnes, Mitchell, 2009). The Decision to buy the detergent for a consumer in both the regions NE and SE is Habitual and hence lacks complexity. It is seen that the level of involvement of the consumer in the decision making process is very low. Also, the consumer is well aware of various brands of detergent or laundry soap which are on offer in the market. Moreover, considering the fact that the risk associated with the purchase of the detergent or laundry soap is minimal, the consumer spends lesser time in evaluating or deciding the brand of purchase. There are various influences which affect the ultimate choice of a consumer. In this case, the various categories of influences which are affecting the consumers choice while buying the detergent powder or laundry soap are shown in Figure 1: There are various different ways in which a consumer tends to internalise any available information to make an informed decision. The key internal influences which are affecting the decision making of the consumers are: Perception: It can be defined as the process of selection, organising and interpreting any information in form of sensation. The consumers perceive Omo as an ideal detergent having all the qualities required to fulfil their washing needs. According to the consumers as given in Exhibit 5, an ideal detergent should demonstrate the following qualities or aspects: Power of the detergent (its ability to clean and whiten the clothes with small quantity of product). Smell/Fragrance (Strong, pleasant smell associated with softening power and gentleness to fabric and hands). Ability to remove stains without laundry soap or bleach The ease with which the powder dissolves and absence of residue (consistency and granularity of the powder). Interestingly, the perception regarding the usage of bleach also differs between the women of the Recife Northeast, where majority of the women prefers using bleach after washing clothes to remove tough stains, whereas only 18% of the women in Sao Paulo Southeast prefer doing so. Learning: It can be defined as the change in buyer behaviour caused due to available information or experience. The consumers in general are well aware of the various brands of washing detergents and soaps available in the market. From the data given regarding Brand Knowledge, market penetration and Top of the mind awareness in Exhibit 8 it is evident that the consumer across regions in Brazil have either the knowledge or have seen or used one or all washing products at some point in time. Lifestyle: Reflects the value, tastes and preferences of people depending on their pattern of living which is determined by how they choose to spend their money, time and energy. The way the clothes are washed differs in both regions since the women in NE attach great value and take pride in keeping themselves and their families spotlessly clean whereas the women in SE consider it as daily chores, less important for self-esteem and social status. Another factor influencing the choice of detergent or soap is the number of households which owns washing machine 28% in Northeast and 73% in Southeast. Social Class: The rank or the status of the people or group in the society can be defined as a Social Class. People are considered to be in the same class who either work in same occupations, having similar level of incomes, or share similar tastes. Exhibit 2 highlights the social class composition in the Southeast and the Northeast of Brazil. The divide is evident with more than 45% of the population in Southeast forming the top 3 Tiers (A, B, C) as compared to the Northeast where more than 53% of the total population form the bottom 2 Tiers (E+ E-). This is one of the major reasons for the difference in the consumption pattern of the detergent powder and laundry soaps in both the regions, although the penetration of both detergent powder and the laundry soap is almost the same. Majority of the population in the north-eastern region use a lot more soap and less detergent as compared to their counterparts in the southeast. Another very interesting fact to note is the frequency at which the clothes are being washed in both the regions. The washing of clothes in the Northeast happens more frequently as compared to the Southeast since the low income group of Northeast have fewer clothes to wear. In the year 1996, the detergent powder and the washing soap market in the Northeast of Brazil was worth a whopping $208 million and growing. As shown in Figure 2 there are 3 key players in the fabric wash market in Brazil with Unilever, the market leader with an 81% market share, close behind is PG with a 15% share in the market and the remaining 4% of the market is captured by local Brazilian companies. The market can be broadly classified based on the type of washing products offered. The detergent powder industry which sells around 42,000 tons of washing powder in the Northeast is growing at an exceptional rate of 17% per annum. And the dominance of major multinationals like Unilever and PG has been because of the capital intensive nature of the of the manufacturing process requiring massive manufacturing and RD costs. Following are some of the key players in the market. Unilever: Unilever has been a dominant force in the detergent powder market in the Northeast with a 75% market share. With a 52 % market share Omo is the most popular and the most dominant brand of detergent powder in the Unilever stable. Minerva is the only brand offered by Unilever in both the detergent powder and the laundry soap with a market share of 17% and 19.1% respectively. And finally Campeiro holds 6% of the total detergent powder market. PG: Although PG entered the Brazilian market in 1988, it has come a long way in becoming the second most successful manufacturer with a 15% share in the detergent powder market. The primary reason for this success can be given to the large amount spend on making manufacturing improvements in the businesses acquired by PG to develop better products for the Brazilian market and the RD and marketing expertise is a direct threat to Unilever. Ace is its the flagship brand which has 11% market share, a direct competitor of Omo with features like superior whiteness, dirt removing capability and fabric protection is priced at 2.35/Kg. The Laundry soap market in the Northeast of Brazil is equally big as compared to the detergent powder industry with revenues of $ 102 million, selling around 8,125 tons per year; however its growth rate at just 6% is far slower than its rival. Unlike the detergent powder market where Unilever and PG were the dominant forces, this market is being dominated by brands manufactured by local Brazilian companies; surprisingly PG offers no products in this segment. Conclusion: The aforementioned analysis clearly indicates that the existing detergent products and the strategy adopted by Unilever to capture the market share and satisfy the needs of the low income consumers hasnt been very successful.
